Distortion Teaser Trailer

Posted in Post Production, promotion with tags , , on November 30, 2008 by Richard Diaz

Here is the teaser trailer for ‘Distortion’. This is a teaser so there isn’t much footage. I did take that original idea and sort of do what I wanted. The opening though was supposed to be TV snow instead of a gray box but it killed the compression. I was getting 100MB files and it looked blocky and awful. It was trying too hard to read all of the little bits of “snow” so I had to dump it. Especially since this trailer is meant for the internet.

The full trailer made up entirely of footage, like a normal trailer, will be done in January. Though I probably won’t post it until after the premiere (assuming I can get it shown) at the Fangoria Weekend Of Horrors in Chicago in early March. For now here is the teaser!

This And That

I think I’m trying to do too much at once. I’ve been editing the teaser trailer but also editing the film. On top of that looking for work. Somehow though I was able to finish the teaser trailer. A few tweaks and it should be done and ready to put on the web. Luckily I already had the idea for it so that was fairly easy. The graphic I originally had for the first half of it though was so busy it messed up the compression. So I was getting these huge files but a very pixilated picture. I made the graphic simpler and now it seems good.

Since the teaser trailer is meant for the web I needed to compromise. What good is having the thing if I can’t post it online? My goal was to have it ready to go by Thanksgiving and it looks like that will be the case. Like I said a few tweaks and it should be ready to go.

I sent it to some friends for feedback. Just in case there is something I’m not seeing.

The rough cut of the film is coming together. Once it is done I will be able to specifically see what it is I need to shoot. I am thinking the main thing are establishing shots but I do still have a newscast to create. The weather here has gotten really cold. Too cold to shoot. Some stuff may have to wait for the spring. I know that sounds bad in some ways but not really. I’ll be editing the film for the next few months anyway. Plus doing the sound work, music, visual effects, etc. The film won’t be ready for a while yet. So if I were to shoot some minor stuff in April even if I am far along in post production it doesn’t affect anything. I just need to drop it in. Luckily I have that flexibility. The newscast is another thing. I will need to have an actor for that and have a quiet location where I can set up the green screen. I’ll worry about that later. Right now I am finishing the teaser trailer and continue working on the rough cut.

And looking for work.

My post production facility. For the two seconds it was clean.

Day Twenty

Basically the last day where I shot a full scene is over. I have little insert shots to do and some minor things, like a newscast, and whatnot. As far as a full scene this was the last one.

What a view. Had to take advantage for some b-roll.

The scene also marked the last scene with Shon. It was sad as he was always a real trooper. He didn’t have to show up. He was in the process of moving to LA and he still showed up to shoot one final scene. I could have shot around him but he didn’t want to. He wanted to make sure the film was done.

Mike’s friend Laurel stood in as the victim which is always hard to find. Luckily she was game for it. Most people don’t want to just be in a film to die. So it helped that she was ok with it.

Is someone there?

Is someone there?

Now I’m busy into editing. Still trying to get over my cold. I also am figuring out what to do as far as a teaser trailer goes. I am debating how much I want to show now. Until I have a rough cut of the entire film I won’t know exactly what I have as a whole. I want to wait to do the full trailer until after I have the rough cut. But for a teaser I can be pretty open. Although I want to do one that is more flash images. Literally a teaser trailer. One trailer I keep thinking about is the one for ‘Bram Stoker’s Dracula’, the Francis Ford Coppola film. You saw running blood and then flash images from the film. I don’t want to do that exactly but the idea of it as a teaser is what I would like to do. My plan is to have it done by Thanksgiving.

Chicago winters are rough and this one is hitting early. I am keeping an eye out for even a decent day to go shoot the last remaining exterior shots. I need some at dusk so I need to time it out right when I do decide. Also while I do the rough cut I can see if there is anything missing. An establishing shot of a location or something. Hopefully nothing with the actors as half the cast has already, or is in the process of, moving away.

So I can honestly say principal photography has rapped. While there are more things to shoot the main stuff is done. As I’ve said before I think the final shot on ‘Distortion’ will be me shooting a building or something. When I’m done I’ll say,”that’s a rap,” and I’ll clap to myself. It’s ok. The project started with me by myself and it’ll end that way. It’ll come full circle.

Sorry about the delay in posts lately. As I was predicting for the last month literally the day after filming ended (sort of considering there are some shots I need to still shoot) I got sick. So I’m getting over a bad cold. I will finish up this week with everything we’ve shot so far.
